Lead With The Heart

How to "lead with the heart" through all circumstances and truly live in your BLISS.

Anything we invest our time/energy into should inspire and uplift us, not drain us. Truly, the most important factor of any situation is how it makes us FEEL. The heart is a powerful interpreter of these feelings, as it is the center of our energetic body, and is actively guiding us towards or away from every situation. Today we will be discussing the many different ways of tuning into the heart and discovering what it is you REALLY want to be doing with your time/energy.

Following Your Bliss

I will be the first to speak on the importance of following ones bliss and that is because doing so essentially changed the course of my entire life.

I had my 10 year plan completely lined out for myself by the time I was a freshman in high school. I was captain of my school's volleyball and soccer team, a straight A student, and a member of the academic honors society. At my school, we had "academies" that were essentially four year programs that you could sign up for as electives. I joined the criminal law academy, as my plan was to graduate with a full ride scholarship and study criminal justice and psychology at a private honors university and ultimately become a forensic psychologist. The dissolving of this plan was a gradual but steady process that began in the summer of 2020 when I had my spiritual awakening.

I started off as most of us did, bridging the learning gap and researching about the chakras, energy, manifestation, etc. I became entranced by the esoteric concepts I discovered. I started hanging out with new and interesting people that also liked and related to these concepts that were suddenly making my life feel so much more vivid and real. This all occurred during the pandemic, so I had plenty of free time to dedicate to my studies and to my own personal growth. By the time schools opened back up and I was able to physically return to that space, I was already a whole different person. I felt trapped, sad, and confused walking through the hallways of the place I once saw as a bridge to all of my future success.

So I transferred to an art school. I no longer knew what I wanted to do with my life, but I knew that creative expression felt good and made me happy. Two months before the end of my junior year at this new school, I met community! Conscious community! Radiant, beautiful souls that made me feel safe, excited, and like I truly mattered. They felt like home. I would hang out with them any chance I got! They were my new family.

One night after hours of singing my heart out with this family and cozying up with my lovely partner of the time, something truly strange happened. I was sitting in the car and, for some reason, had to wait a very long time before my partner came back. As I was sitting in the car, I felt a sensation throughout my whole body. It entered through the side of my head as if I had been shot by a gun, and for a split second, I went into total shock. I looked down at myself and I was fine, but I had to acknowledge how strange what just happened was. I decided to to sit with this strangeness and a very powerful question came to me:

"If I had died just now, would I be happy with the life I have lived up until this point?"

I sat with this question for a moment. I had become very upset earlier that evening because I wanted to stay with this family for longer, but I had to leave because I had school the next day. I started to dive into that feeling of being forced to choose between two things. At school, although I was grateful to be in this new place, that feeling of being trapped never went away and only increased as my community and my desires in life expanded. With this conscious community that adopted me without a second thought, I felt loved and able to explore myself in every single way I could possibly imagine with no judgement or restriction. The answer was obvious, and although it took me about 24 hours to really allow myself to see, I needed to leave the American education system. And I did. I never went to another class after that day. I was officially a high school drop out.

This was the beginning of my new life.

No less than a week later, my partner and I were invited to Kauai, Hawaii! My heart soared with excitement at the potential of this new opportunity and the fact that I no longer had any obligations restricting me from exploring such an opportunity. So I went! The adventures I had on Kauai are definitely a story for another time, but my oh my were they potent! I learned so much about myself, faced some of the most horrendous shadows I have ever had to address within my mind, fell absolutely head over heels in love with someone, and finally discovered what I wanted to do with my life! Since my return from the island 6 months ago, I've become a legal adult (lol), launched my business, and began to lay out my NEW 10 year plan, one that actually resonates with my inner being to the fullest it possibly can at this point in time.

My point with sharing this story was to emphasize how the choices I made were based off of the feelings I had around them. My first high school started out feeling like a great segue into adulthood and then began to feel super uncomfortable, so I chose to go somewhere that inspired me and brought me joy and creative liberation. My spiritual journey began to develop further and only helped me grow in positive ways as a human being, so I chose to continue on my path. The community I found made me understand what was truly important to me, and that was my freedom, so I made the choice to drop out which led me to being able to go to Hawaii! Every single time I chose to follow what felt good, what felt right and blissful, I liberated myself that much more. I wouldn't be where I am today without the decisions I made to continually follow my bliss, and even though making those decisions was really scary at times, I am so grateful that I did.

That all being said, this is why I encourage you to follow your bliss and why I felt inspired to talk about the many different ways you can get in touch with that part of you that always knows exactly where it wants to be: your heart!

Different Ways To Discover What Truly Matters To You and Lead With Your Heart

The following are different ways of activating and tuning in to that heart space that personally liberated me as well as people I love. You will internally know what is going to be most liberating for you, and I encourage you to use your discernment and begin practicing using feeling as your guidance system as you look through these different recommendations. If something particularly stands out to you or makes you feel excited, or even nervous, try it out! If something doesn't really strike any nerve whatsoever, leave it be, as it may not be the right medicine for you. I also want to preface these recommendations with this: Your heart already knows exactly where it wants to be and what would truly make you happy. These practices and exercises are simply designed to allow you to get in touch with that heart space so you can hear what your heart has to say.

1) Traditional Heart Chakra Work

This is where it really all began for me personally. The Anahata chakra, aka the heart chakra, is what you want to be working with when deciding you want to lead with your heart and follow your bliss. Different ways of activating and healing this chakra include working with the colors green and/or pink through visualization, food, clothing, and certain crystals that are of these colors. You can do guided meditations and sit with 639 Hz frequencies, which you can find on YouTube. If you feel so inclined, you can also purchase a heart chakra singing bowl aligned with this frequency. If traditional heart chakra work feels in resonance for you, I highly recommend doing independent research on the origins of the chakra system and other ways of activating, healing, and balancing this energy system within you.

2) Drum It Out!

One of the first things I learned about drumming, specifically primal drumming, was to align the beat of the drum with the HEART. I have attended intimate and large scale drumming events for years and they truly and consistently set my heart free. Working with the drum is a powerful and versatile experience. You can be the one honing in on the beat and smacking the drum, you can dance to the rhythm, or you can simply receive its potent medicine. Humans have been banging on things and making sounds since the dawn of time and connecting to this primal energy can assist in breaking down the boundaries of our everyday restrictions and transport us to places we didn't even know we wanted to go. This is not sponsored, but we have a sister in Miami who hosts incredible primal drumming activations that I highly recommend if you're looking to connect deeper with primal drumming. You can find her on Instagram: @drumtemple_

There is also a huge drum circle that gathers every full moon in Miami Beach that is an incredible portal if your looking to submerge yourself in drumming and dancing. You can find more information about this on their Instagram as well: @fullmoondrumcirclemiami

3) The Comfort Zone

One of the most uncomfortable but MOST rewarding practices I've discovered is to intentionally push past the comfort zone any chance I get. As I mentioned earlier in this post, I made a lot of huge and permanent decisions that lead me to where I am now and BY NO MEANS were these decisions easy to make. In fact, they were the hardest decisions of all. They required me to go against everything I knew to honor what I felt, and I had no idea what the outcome of doing that would be. There is a quote that says "growth is uncomfortable" and it really is! It requires you to try new things, move past insecurities, and not only get in the driver's seat of life, but metaphorically go off-roading!

Have you ever felt like you kinda wanted to do something, but you were too shy or uncertain about how you would be received or what would happen if you did that thing? Those are the moments that you do the thing! This step is an unavoidable part of the process of living in your bliss and leading an authentic life, but it's up to you whether this becomes an intentional practice or something you're forced to do.

4) Plant Medicine

The journey of working with plant medicine is not for everyone, and if it is something you haven't worked with before, I recommend doing a lot of research about any medicine you are feeling interested in sitting with. Plant medicine is another one of those things, similar to primal drumming, that allows you to break out of the typical thought patterns and molds you've been operating within up until now. It allows you to see beyond your current perspectives and tap into your inner truths. There are some medicines, such as Madre Ayahuasca, that specifically bring you into that heart space and allow for deep releases, but ultimately these medicines will call to you when you are meant to work with them. If you feel a calling to a particular medicine, do your research, find wholesome and well reviewed medicine people who can administer it to you, and prepare appropriately for their potent lessons. You can set the intention, if you so feel called, to tune into your heart and allow yourself to see what it is you truly want out of life.

A medicine that was absolutely transformational for me in my life and the lives of some of my dearest friends is called "Hapeh". It is a sacred tobacco snuff blessed and crafted by shamans, mainly in South America. It is a wonderful plant medicine to work with for those of you that are just beginning to explore the realm of plant medicine, as the intensity of the effects only last for about 5-15 minutes. It is not psychoactive in any way and actually grounds you into your body and onto the earth. I personally recommend this medicine if you feel called to it.

5) The Journey of Self Care

This is probably one of the most organic ways of tuning into the heart space. When you are taking care of your body, going to the gym, eating healthy food and drinking clean water, pampering yourself on a physical, spiritual and mental level, and just in general taking good care of yourself, you naturally begin to be attracted to people, places, and things that also align with this energy of self care and love. Without the journey of self care, you can only go so far. The way you treat yourself will be directly reflected by your reality, and if you are being unkind to yourself, you will be attracting experiences that are unkind to you and simultaneously misaligned with your intention of living a life that feels blissful. Inner bliss is the true key to outer bliss, as everything starts within and eventually manifests externally,

These are my main tips and tricks for you today! My intention with these posts is to encourage one to live a more authentic and, ultimately, blissful life. I hope that at least one of these recommendations sparked some inspiration for you on your journey of leading with your heart. I send you all my love as you continue to do your best. I also want to remind you that doing your best is 100% doing enough. Accepting where you are now and how fast or slow you're getting to where you want to be is part of that inner compassion and blissful living. So take it easy! Don't be to hard on yourself and always strive for better. You can do anything you put your mind to.
